Why Support APP?
We believe that as an organisation we have demonstrated:
Leadership and insight
- We work in countries which have a very high number of NGOs, yet there are almost no organisations who are assisting people in prison.
- We have built an organisation of highly committed and high calibre individuals.
- We have won a number of awards including the Beacon Prize for Philanthropy and an African Achievers International Award for implementing millennium development goals.
Ambition
- Although we have only been a UK registered charity since 2007, we have already transported more than 120,000 books to Africa and created more than 8 prison libraries, including portable libraries; refurbished or built 6 medical centres and welfare offices; supported more than twenty prisons sports leagues and worked with over 20,000 prisoners and staff.
Innovation
- Highly innovative approach, using infrastructure projects to gain access and then building on partnerships with the prison services through service delivery. Ultimately we hope our work with prisons services will develop a new model for imprisonment, based on rehabilitation and development of prisoners and a humane approach which recognises the inherent humanity of each person in prison.
- Our work with the media, volunteers, through supporting research and creating partnerships with businesses and charities who would not have considered activities in prisons contributes towards systemic change in attitudes towards criminal justice and imprisonment.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt and change and balance a clear strategic vision with the need for a flexible/ opportunistic delivery plan.
Resourcefulness
- Working in very constraining conditions due to the reliance on the prison services and with uncertain funding APP has consistently delivered numerous projects
Sustainability
- Our model is built on low cost interventions and a grass roots approach, which is appropriate for the resource limited countries we work in.
- Our work complements the advocacy work which is already being done by organisations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
