Who We Are

We belong. We care. We serve.

The African Prisons Project team is made up of many members and is often supported by volunteers. The spirit of APP is shown in the Latin word ‘hospitium’ or hospitality, this means that we are a family, showing love for each other and those we work with.

Every member of the team is precious and can be expected to support and be supported in times of trouble. The love within the team overflows to those we work with.

We belong:

Our staff and volunteers are social beings, whose needs should be recognized and fulfilled. We belong because we are recognized and rewarded for living the APP ethos. This recognition of needs will instill a sense of belonging to the APP family.

In practice, this sense of belonging means:

  • Encouraging a spirit, culture and practice of collaboration, teamwork and collegiality among all members of staff, volunteers and partners, thereby fostering effective relations with prisons services.

We care:

APP staff should be courteous when providing services to prisoners and prisons staff by listening to their problems, apologizing when necessary and serving with a smile. We care because we are devoted to doing a job to the end, ensuring that we deliver beyond our beneficiary expectations. APP employees should respect all beneficiaries regardless of background, offence, punishment, gender, colour or creed.

In practice, this spirit of caring means:

  • Understanding beneficiary needs through regularly consulting with them and being open to receiving input, including criticism, from them.
  • Going beyond the call of duty even under difficult circumstances where there are limited resources.

We serve:

In order to have a sense of service; APP should develop service standards, provide information, serek service delivery solutions and go beyond the call of duty. We serve by delivering quality services and making beneficiaries look forward to receiving world class, integrated services.
