PROJECT VOLUNTEER: Spiritual Support

African Prisons Project (APP) is an innovative charity founded to improve access to healthcare, education, justice and community reintegration for prisoners in Africa. APP is recruiting for spiritual support volunteers.

APP is recruiting for volunteers to join us for 3 month periods.

1 between Feb – April (deadline for applications 20/01/2011)

1 between April – June (deadline for applications 10/03/2011)

1 for July – Sept (deadline for applications 10/06/2011)

1 for the October – December (deadline for applications 10/09/2011)

The spiritual support volunteers will live with and work alongside the APP team. The volunteer will assist Reverend Canon Fred Komunda, the only Church of Uganda Chaplain to Uganda Prisons. Revd Komunda is based at Luzira Prisons Complex which consists of 5 prison units. The volunteers will support Revd Fred and Frank Nyakana with conducting services and bible studies, but more broadly in offering a wide range of spiritual and rehabilitative support to inmates and staff, including offering counselling, Alpha courses, peace building courses and assistance to ex inmates during the crucial few days immediately after their release from detention.  Each volunteer will be expected to commit to being in Uganda for 3 months.

Volunteers will need to contribute towards their trip.

Requirements: The volunteer should have an interest in spiritual work, religious tolerance, patience, empathy, self confidence,self motivation and excellent communication skills. They should be prepared to live in comfortable, but basic accommodation.
