Overview and Celebration of 2011

15 December 2011

2011 has been a very busy and successful year for APP and a time of growth and ambition...

This year, APP has achieved a great deal both through its projects and within the organisation itself. APP has established a resource centre for ex-inmates, prison staff and their families, including a library, computer room and vocational training centre – which is used by approximately 600 people per month on average. The resource centre has proved very successful and we look forward to expanding the programmes we run at the centre in 2012. APP has been able to provide daily, functional literacy and numeracy classes to the wives of prison staff and their children. These classes, headed by Miss Asiimwe, are attended by approximately 1,000 people every month. APP has also provided library services at a number of prisons in and around Kampala, including permanent and mobile libraries, used by approximately 600 inmates and prison staff every month. Alongside this access to education APP has been able to provide sports, music, drama and art activities for the benefit of approximately 1,200 prisoners per year. APP has provided paralegal assistance to approximately 50 death row inmates and counselling services to another 50 inmates and staff per month. APP has provided nutritional support to 50 HIV positive inmates this year and has provided palliative care training and palliative care manuals to approximately 30 prison health workers and prisoner carers. APP has provided scholarships and/or educational support to a total of nine Kenyan and Ugandan prisoners and prison staff to read for a Diploma in the Common Law and LLB degrees via correspondence with the University of London. Alongside these activities, APP has conducted research on palliative care provision for prisoners and staff in Uganda, the situation facing women and children in prisons in Uganda and justice for girls in Sierra Leone.

A considerable amount of internal work has also taken place in the past year to bring greater strength to the organisation. This year APP has welcomed three new Trustees, Paul, Pat and James to its board and employed a UK fundraiser. APP in Uganda has welcomed two new teachers, Moses and Winnie; Jacque the librarian; two new counsellors, Juliet and Stella; an I T specialist, Francis, and a Spiritual Worker, Frank into the APP Uganda Team.
We believe we can only move up from here. We believe that it is now time to take APP to the next level to ensure hope and dignity for all men, women and children in prisons in Africa through healthcare, education, access to justice and community reintegration.

Thank you to all of our supporters, partners, volunteers and donors who have made this work possible and who continue to place their confidence and trust in us. On behalf of the inmates and prison staff we serve, and from all at APP, we thank you and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
