On Tuesday 14th February, African Prisons Project was delighted to host an opening ceremony celebrating the completion of Murchison Bay Primary School library. The library was fully-stocked and handed over with joy to the headmistress, librarian, teachers and students at the school. Also in attendance were the Superintendent of Prisons and two Assistant Superintendents. We were delighted to receive guests from the International Committee of the Red Cross, Palliative Care Association of Uganda and Hospice Africa at the ceremony.
Children of Murchison Bay Primary School sang and danced for the guests as well as performing readings from the library’s collection. The opening was also celebrated through the performance of a moot court. APP has held mooting activities with inmates previously within its access to justice programmes, but this was the first public moot held. It was a great success, involving four prison warders and three ex-inmates. As a result, the participants have been invited to perform on Saturday 18th February on the occasion of the Archbishop of Uganda’s birthday.
Finally, the opening ceremony closed with the cutting of a cake to the sound of ‘Congratulations’ by Cliff Richard – this continues to be a perennial favourite at Ugandan celebrations!
Thanks are due to all who have supported the work of APP in delivering Murchison Bay Primary School library. Particularly, thanks to those who donated through our online campaigns and shared their own favourite children’s books with us. In addition, we would like to thank our partner Book Aid for its support.
This is now the tenth piece of infrastructure that APP has provided to Uganda Prisons, which include health centres, clinics and welfare offices. To help us continue this much-needed work, please visit our Donate page.
