APP is Recruiting for a UK Fellowship Officer
19 April 2012
African Prisons Project (APP) is an innovative charity founded to improve access to healthcare, education, justice and community reintegration for prisoners in Africa. APP works to establish a new model for imprisonment in Africa, based on a respect for human rights and prisons as places of positive transformation. APP’s work is built on three pillars: infrastructure development; formal and informal education, which ranges from functional adult literacy to helping prisoners and prisons staff study for law degrees by correspondence with British universities; and community sensitisation. As our charity continues to grow and to offer more support to prisoners and their families in Africa, we are looking to appoint a Fellowship Officer, based in the UK to oversee all aspects of the APP fellowship programme.

This person will work in the UK. This core objective of this role will be to establish a leadership development programme for senior prisons staff across Africa, incorporating both academic and personal development - drawing on examples such as the Clore Social Leadership Programme, Tearfund Inspire Individuals Initiative and Commonwealth Fellowship Fund. The role will include developing our relationships with UK universities who are offering scholarships as well as making contact and developing relationships with other UK universities who could offer scholarships and individuals and institutions that could act as mentors or work placements for the fellows. This role will involve recruiting candidates from across Africa and to oversee all aspects of administration and support for students, before, during and after their studies in the UK, including liaising with universities, government agencies, prison services and others. This person will have the overall responsibility for the development of the fellowship programme for prison staff. This person will work closely with the overall APP Director General, and report to them regularly.
Applications will be welcomed from candidates who have previously worked in public sector organisations, who have preferably gained experience within prisons, charities or government. This is an excellent opportunity to transfer your skills to a rewarding role where you can make an impact. If you are successful in this role you will be helping to change prison sentences in Uganda into a time of positive transformation and break the cycle of crime.
This is initially a part time role, but we envisage it being a full-time time role after 3-6 months, based in the UK. The salary is dependent upon experience and the remuneration package is competitive. For more information and details of how to apply please contact emmahumphrey@africanprisons.org. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 1st May at 5pm.
