Our Strategy

The experience of being in prison in Africa is very different to that in developed countries. From the justice system to the prison facilities, the experience of just visiting, let alone spending decades in prison, can be frightful. African Prisons Project achieves its objectives using a two-fold strategy.

1. Infrastructure - sustainable and long-term improvements

By improving prison infrastructure such as by building libraries and infirmaries, APP creates sustainable improvements in conjunction with the authorities. This sets achievable goals for the authorities to replicate in other prisons, and also sets an example for neighbouring countries - as demonstrated by official invitations for APP to assist countries neighbouring Uganda.

2. Working to improve general welfare - vital assistance in the short term

The provision of humanitarian supplies (material assistance) to prisons makes a significant difference, at a low cost. Because of the access and trust we develop with authorities, APP is best placed to deliver such assistance, from blankets to food for AIDS patients.
